A stop on the way to Santiago of Compostella
and a town twinned with Astorga (Spain)

 

In 951, bishop GODESCALC opened the first known path towards Santiago, it started from Le Puy.
On Aymery PICAUD'S CODEX CALIXTINUS (1140), only three French towns :
LE PUY, CONQUES, and MOISSAC are pointed out as stops.

Cluniac monks, who had this road developed, has affiliated, in 1047, this "royal abbey" which treasured numerous relics and could house a lot of pilgrims.

Nowadays, in Moissac, located a quarter of the path between LE PUY and COMPOSTELLA pilgrims can visit a world-widely known site, rest and find accomodation especially in the CARMEL (a former Carmelites'convent), as well as in hotels, and assitance lodging, in the presbytery.

The Carmel is an international rest and accomodation centre near the abbey-church, which Moissac mayorship founded to welcome the more and more numerous pilgrims.

Furthermore, Moissac is twinned wih the town of ASTORGA (region of Leon), another major stop in Spain.

Pilgrims' books can be stamped in the Tourist Office, the Presbytery and the rest and accomodation centre.
